This is the original problem from an employee...
Two employees, one male, one female (pregnant) and both married (not to each other), are friendly toward each other but no obvious signs of romantic involvement.

Male's wife suspects an affair between the two. The female employee advises HR she has been receiving threats from the male employee's spouse. She is advised to seek legal advice and police assistance if she believes the threats to be valid.

Two days later, female employee is attacked by male employee's spouse. Attack took place outside of working hours and not on or near the companies property. Female suffered miscarriage due to the attack.

Outside of the obvious current legal and police involvement dealing with the attacker and the victim, is there anything more the Company should have done differently?

I'm not sure of the legal ramifications if the company had called the police and had them come to meet with the employee on company property to have the employee file a complaint. Regardless, it would have been up to the female employee to file a complaint if she felt it was a real and credible threat. Also the male employee should have taken a more active role with his spouse to try to determine if it was a real threat as well as to convince his wife the concern was unfounded.

Think about it this way.. you have a son or a daughter.. your child is upset with their best friend because they didn't want to go to the movies on Friday because their Dad made family plans. Your son/daughter are so make they don't know what they will do... You come home from the family outing on Friday to voicemail on your phone that someone threw paint all over your don/daughters best friends parents driveway and garage door. What do you do? You didn't call the parents and let them know... You didn't realize how mad your son/daughter was. They destroyed property. Same situation, just different factors. Either way you are just as responsible for the action of others as those in your description. Just a thought.

It is SO hard to say. There are probably thousands of pieces of information that you cannot provide here, or do not know. Every situation is 100% different. It is difficult to say what the company's roll or involvement should have been.

Cloudy issue.
